Chapter 21 – Salvation at the Rim of Hell

Wow, the last chapter of Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors!

The O’Briens finally make it to the Grand Canyon, where they have the final showdown with the Inferno.

*          *          *

Thank you to everybody who’s listened to the end — it means so much to me.

The podcast is done, but it will still remain online…in its entirety. If you’ve enjoyed Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors, tell your friends they can listen from the start here are roadtripfromhell.com. If you subscribe through iTunes, please consider leaving a starred rating or writing a review.

*          *          *

I hope you enjoy the last chapter of Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors. Thank you for coming along for the ride.

Chapter 20 – Yes, It’s True–Satan Owns My Father’s Soul

I can’t believe we’re already at the second-to-last chapter of Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors!

Like a good road trip, once the planning was done, it kept rolling along. We’re almost to the Grand Canyon and the end of the story.

This week, James finds out all he he gave up when he signed the contract to buy The Inferno.

Next week: It’s all over!

Thanks for coming along this far. If you’ve enjoyed the trip, please tell your friends about roadtripfromhell.com. Just because the podcast is done doesn’t mean it’s going away: it will be online — in its entirety — for people to listen to. So please spread the word!

Chapter 19 – The Church of the Holy Visage

In an old church along Route 666, The O’Briens face off against the sinister force that has possessed Lucky.

*          *          *

It’s hard to believe Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors is almost done!

Next week, James finds out where he went wrong when signing for the Inferno and the week after that, all hell breaks loose at the rim of the Grand Canyon.

Thanks for listening, everybody; I hope this chapter cracks you up!

Chapter 18 – Of Half-Buried Cadillacs and Fully Possessed Chihuahuas

This week, the O’Briens begin the day in the Texas Panhandle, at Cadillac Ranch. After a stop in New Mexico to look at rattlesnakes, Lucky’s true nature is revealed.

*          *          *

It’s hard to believe Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors will be coming to an end on February 20!

If you’ve been enjoying the story, let me know. I’m not sure if I’ll work on another podcast right away, but as I recorded this chapter and realized the end of the trip is near, I’m thinking about what to do next.

It gets crazy from the end of this chapter to the final chapter; thank you all for coming along on the ride.

Chapter 16 – The Patron Saint of Bingo

With only $5 to their name, the O’Briens hit a bingo hall in the hope that Mary can turn $5 into something more.

*          *          *

Since this is a short chapter, be sure to keep listening after the end credits for a short story called “Gutterball.”

“Gutterball” is a short story about a bulldog with an eating issue. I recorded the story as a test before recording Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors.

I’ve mentioned wanting to release Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors as an e-book. I also used “Gutterball” to test formatting for the Kindle. You can see what kinds of writing I do when I’m not writing humorous coming-of-age stories here.

*          *          *

Okay, on to this week’s chapter!

Chapter 15 – The Writing on the Wall

A picture of a Stuckey's sign I took near the Missouri/Arkansas border.

Is Lucky alive or dead? What happens when the O’Briens make a stop at Stuckey’s? And more important: what happens after the Stuckey’s stop?

The five winners will be picked on January 8, and they will be announced on next week’s podcast.

Oh, and don’t worry if you live outside of the United States — I’ll still send things your way if you win.

Okay, on to this week’s chapter!

Troy Paiva’s Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration

I stumbled upon Troy Paiva’s Lost America website in 1998 and instantly fell in love with his photography.

Not only was Troy out on the road taking photos…he was taking night photos of all the places time has forgotten; the kinds of places I’ve loved all my life.

Troy gives life to things long dead — the things most people don’t give a second look as they drive by. With an eerie glow, Troy resurrects the past and creates physical dreamscapes.

The Giveaway

I’m giving away a signed copy of Troy’s book, Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration (and a handful of other goodies!).

The book is beautiful — and it’s not all photos. There is a lot of commentary throughout the book as well.

All you have to do to be eligible to win is leave a comment on roadtripfromhell.com letting me know what you like about Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors. You can also send email, or use the contact form on the website. Or…just “Like” the Road Trip From Hell Facebook page.

On January 8 — on what would have been Elvis Presley’s birthday — a winner will be selected and announced on the podcast chapter loaded on January 9, 2011.

Good luck!

Here’s What Troy Does

If you want to see the kind of work Troy does, look no further.

Some of these images are in Night Vision: The Art of Urban Exploration, and some are from his website.

Some New Work at Lost America

Troy shared a couple links to some recent work worth checking out:

Lost Highway 58

What Have We Lost

In the current episode of Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors, there’s a section where Michael talks about his fathers feeling about what we’ve lost as a nation when we went from state highways to interstates dotted with corporations.

Fortunately, there are people like Troy who are still roaming the highways finding what we’ve lost…

A Final Photo

I love this photo — a ’58 Rambler (with a Gremlin in the background)!

I love it because James traded a Gremlin in for the Inferno in Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors.

I’ve always seen the Inferno as a cross between a ’58 Rambler and a ’57 Chevy Nomad wagon.

Is it any wonder why I love Troy’s photography so much…

All photos copyright Troy Paiva.

Chapter 13 – Swelling Itching Brain

When Michael’s put in charge of caring for Lucky, things go very wrong and Mary becomes very angry! Fortunately, there’s a moment of peace between the morning mayhem and arriving at Clyde McAllister’s Gator Village and Civil War Memorial.

Mid-Week Surf Music

Much of the United States is experiencing an arctic blast and preparing for the mad rush of Thanksgiving.

What better way to come in from the cold and relax than listening to some surf music?

So grab a beer or cocktail and pretend you’re someplace warm, ’cause here we go!

Pirato Ketchup – “Surf Sourire”

I’ve shared the live version of their song that I used for the opening of the Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors podcast. Here’s another taste the band:

The Dead Rocks – “Center of the Universe”

Pirato Ketchup is gearing up for a vinyl release (yep, people still buy vinyl ’cause vinyl’s still cool!) and splitting a side with Brazil’s The Dead Rocks:

Rick K and the Allnighters – “Wipeout”

Antoine Pottier (from Pirato Ketchup) shared this on his Facebook page. Gotta love the swapping with the drums on a surf tune everybody knows.

Man…or Astroman? – “Reversal of Polarity”

Speaking of swapping instruments, here’s Man…or Astroman sharing an instrument. (It really picks up about 1:35 into the video.)

Oh, Hell–one more by Man…or Astroman; this time, with a theramin!

Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet – “Having an Average Weekend”

One of my favorite surf surprises was seeing Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet open for the Dead Milkmen years ago.

I didn’t know who they were at first, but I knew who they were the minute they played “Having and Average Weekend.”

Dick Dale and the Del-Tones – “Miserlou”

He was doing it back in the early 60s:

And in his 70s, not even cancer can stop him! – “Miserlou” again.

Operation Ivy – “Bankshot”

And even though it’s not a straight up surf tune, it’s as close as Op Ivy got:

Chapter 8 – A Breath of Fresh Air

A stop at a campsite results in Mary and Margie fighting over June’s ashes. After Michael tells James about Lucky’s possession, the Inferno launches its most vicious attack against Michael yet.

*           *           *

It’s a short chapter this week, mainly because there’s more dialog than usual. Also, a warning to people listening while driving to or from work: there’s are a few sudden car horn sound effects in this week’s episode. So don’t be startled — it’s only The Inferno!

Also, if you’re enjoying Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors, please leave a comment below, or swing by iTunes to leave a rating or review. You can click the iTunes button to the right.

I hope everybody’s having a great weekend; here’s to a wonderful week ahead!

Welcome, Belgium!

To all the new visitors visiting roadtripfromhell.com from Belgium: if my high school French allowed me to say more than just “Je m’appele Christophe. Je suis américain. J’habite au Texas,” or had I picked up more Flemish from the foreign exchange student from Belgium in my school 23 years ago, I’d give you all a proper thank you!

Instead, the best I can do is say thank you for checking out roadtripfromhell.com, and letting you know how much I adore Belgian ales and Pirato Ketchup…en anglais. (Seriously, a visit to Belgium is very high on my list of wonderful places I want to see!)

I hope you like what’s here, and I promise to do all I can to promote the best Belgian surf band on the planet! 🙂

Chapter 4 – St. Christopher vs. The Dead Cow

Finally on the road, the O’Briens’ trip to pick up Aunt Margie in West Virginia begins with an argument. Things only go downhill from there.

In spite of Michael’s attempts to have some fun on the trip, Michael faces attacks by Lucky, Olivia and Elvis, and even The Inferno. And that’s all before Mary forces the family to make a pit stop that results in a photo that haunts Michael to this very day…

Pirato Ketchup – Escape from Tridion

When I started the Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors podcast, I knew I wanted the opening theme to be surf music.

But not just any old surf music — I wanted something with a lot of energy, something that made me think of a big, possessed station wagon flying down the highway out of control.

A Creative Commons search led me to a surf band in Belgium called Pirato Ketchup. Their song, “Escape from Tridion” was exactly what I was looking for.

Here’s a video of them performing the song live.

Since I post new episodes of Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors on Sundays, I figured something in the middle of the week would be nice.

Hope everybody’s having a great week!

Chapter 2 – The Big Orange Hole in the Ground My Grandmother Loved So Dearly

Michael ponders what strange force has kept his parents together, while James and Michael’s mother, Mary, strike a series of deals regarding The Inferno and Mary’s pet Chihuahua, Lucky. Also witness the opening moves in the ongoing mental chess match that Michael plays with his evil younger siblings, Elvis and Olivia.

Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors

What Are You Doing?

I’m currently kicking the tires and filling up the tank for the Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors podcast.

What the Hell is Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors?

Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors is the first novel I ever wrote, a humorous coming-of-age story about a family traveling cross country in a possessed station wagon.

I’ve decided to release Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors as a podcast.

Sounds Cool–When Does it Start?

On Sunday, 10/03/2010, the The Hell Comes With Wood Paneled Doors podcast begins. Every week, I’ll post a new chapter.

Right now, I’m still in the process of creating the site, but I hope you’ll come along for the ride.

I Will!

Thank you.
