Mark Hosack’s Identity Problem

March 8, 2012 by Christopher Gronlund 4 Comments

While I have a bit of a hard time speaking up for my own writing, I have no problems promoting others doing things I like and believe in.

Meet Mark Hosack

The first time I met Mark Hosack I thought, “Okay, maybe my haircut ISN’T so bad after all!”

It was a kickoff meeting for the crew of a movie he had written and was directing called Pale Blue Moon.

Mark went on to write other movies, (NSFW trailer for Give Em Hell Malone) — and because editing, writing, and occasionally directing movies isn’t enough (as well as raising a couple kids), Mark decided, “Hell…think I’ll write a book!”

And he made a book trailer for his book…even though…well, you’ll have to watch it!

A Good Example of Generating Early Buzz

I’m not saying this because I like Mark: I have only seen one or two book trailers that made me actually care about a book. I don’t know why, but most book trailers seem made just because that’s what you’re supposed to do — and it often shows. I share the first book trailer for Mark’s soon-to-be book in part because he’s a friend. Of course I’m going to support a friend.

But it’s also a damn good example of what we can all do with very little to generate early buzz for the things we’re working on…

Oh! Be sure to check out Mark’s webpage…particularly the Author Statement. Cracked me up!

(And I’ve heard it whispered on the wind that I just might be running an interview on The Juggling Writer with Mark sometime in the not-too-distant future…)

Heh. I loved that trailer. Mostly, I see them as unnecessary, but that one was great — in part because of its simplicity.

Hey Chris — thanks so much for the plug! Shawn, so glad you enjoyed it. And yes, I’ve heard whisperings about this interview too………

Shawn: I agree. I don’t know why I dislike book trailers as much as I do, but they never do much for me. Even those that are done well. Maybe part of it is most book trailers could just be done as a blurb. The few that got my interest were like Mark’s — where there was a reason to watch because it used the medium, instead of just something I could read and get everything I got from the trailer.

Mark: You’re welcome. It just so happened that the week I’ve been talking about promoting myself better, you come out with a new website and the first thing is mighty damn clever and fun!

    Great job!
