{"id":2951,"date":"2011-08-31T05:30:58","date_gmt":"2011-08-31T10:30:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/?p=2951"},"modified":"2011-08-30T17:37:34","modified_gmt":"2011-08-30T22:37:34","slug":"how-to-make-a-writing-plan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/2011\/08\/31\/how-to-make-a-writing-plan\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Make a Writing Plan"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"A blueprint.\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/images\/blueprint.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"363\" \/>It&#8217;s a nice thought to imagine that one day a creative urge will hit you and you&#8217;ll finally write that novel you&#8217;ve thought about writing for years. <a title=\"The Juggling Writer entry: &quot;Killing the Muse.&quot;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/2009\/11\/11\/killing-the-muse\/\">But it doesn&#8217;t work that way<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you think, &#8220;I&#8217;ll start being creative when I retire,&#8221; but here&#8217;s the thing: it takes a <em>lot <\/em>of <a title=\"Link to Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.time.com\/time\/magazine\/article\/0,9171,1858880,00.html\">practice <\/a>to be &#8220;creative.&#8221; If you don&#8217;t do it now, you very well could be dead before reaching your potential.<\/p>\n<p>So how do you produce regularly?<\/p>\n<p>Come up with a plan&#8211;even a basic plan&#8211;and stick to it!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>My Current Writing Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what my current plan looks like:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Submit <a title=\"A sneak peek at my latest novel.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/promisepeek.pdf\"><em>Promise<\/em><\/a> to agents.<\/li>\n<li> Keep working on the outline for <em>A Magic Life<\/em>. (My next book.)<\/li>\n<li> Rewrite my second novel and sell it as an ebook.<\/li>\n<li>Work on the outline for <em>Twelve Rounds with You<\/em>. (A one-act play that has generated some interest.) If the interest is genuine, then write the thing.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s it, and it&#8217;s plenty to keep me busy.<\/p>\n<p>The great thing about the plan? If I don&#8217;t feel like working on one thing for some reason, I have other things to work on.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Benefit of Having a Writing Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Such a simple plan comes with a great benefit: I never have a reason to <em>not <\/em>be busy.<\/p>\n<p>Read that again: <strong>&#8220;I never have a reason to <em>not <\/em>be busy.&#8221; <\/strong>It&#8217;s easy to sit in front of a TV and hope inspiration strikes, but it&#8217;s better to have something that ensures you&#8217;ll <em>actually <\/em>be productive.<\/p>\n<p>Writing&#8217;s work, and when you have a plan&#8211;even if it&#8217;s just a loose list&#8211;there&#8217;s no reason to be lazy. Throw in some self-imposed deadlines, and every year you&#8217;re another step closer to your dreams. It&#8217;s really that easy!<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Your Plan<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So what are you working on right now? What are your plans for the rest of 2011.
