{"id":2451,"date":"2010-12-25T18:15:58","date_gmt":"2010-12-25T23:15:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/?p=2451"},"modified":"2010-12-25T18:24:48","modified_gmt":"2010-12-25T23:24:48","slug":"give-yourself-the-gift-of-writing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/2010\/12\/25\/give-yourself-the-gift-of-writing\/","title":{"rendered":"Give Yourself the Gift of Writing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignright\" title=\"Elisabeth Tover Bailey's The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating\" src=\"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/images\/snailbook.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"333\" \/>I thought about doing another <a title=\"Link to The Juggling Writer entry about the gift of books.\" href=\"http:\/\/www.christophergronlund.com\/blog\/tjw\/2009\/12\/25\/the-gift-of-books\/\">The Gift of Books<\/a> Christmas entry like last year, but I can sum up this year&#8217;s reading gifts with the photo I used for this entry and another book given to me by my mom &#8212; and a thank you to my sister-in-law and family for a nice gift certificate that ensures hours on the couch with books in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<p>This year, I want to talk about something else&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Gift of Writing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This year, I want to talk about a gift writers can give themselves: the gift of writing!<\/p>\n<p>Simply by producing regular content, whether it&#8217;s fiction, articles, poetry&#8230;<em>whatever<\/em> &#8212; you&#8217;re giving yourself a gift that comes back to you.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s what I mean&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Ghost of Writing Past<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A couple months ago, I got a Facebook message from <a title=\"Link to Alan J. Porter's website.\" href=\"http:\/\/alanjporter.com\/\">a fellow writer<\/a> who read an old story I wrote in an old comic book anthology. (It was the first thing I ever wrote with the hope of seeing published&#8230;ah, if only <em>all<\/em> sales were so easy!)<\/p>\n<p>To hear that somebody loved something you wrote over 15 years ago &#8212; and that they just discovered it &#8212; is one of the coolest feelings out there.<\/p>\n<p>I hadn&#8217;t thought of the story, dragged the old comic book out of my comic book boxes, or stumbled upon some of the art I have for the story in over a year.<\/p>\n<p>So it was a very cool feeling having somebody say, &#8220;Hey, <em>loved<\/em> that story!&#8221; when I wasn&#8217;t expecting it.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>It Really Does Come Back<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I occasionally hear from people who stumble upon old writing, long after I&#8217;ve moved on.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a great feeling I hope everybody reading this experiences.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Only One Way<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When I hear from somebody who discovers things I&#8217;ve written, it&#8217;s a reminder that what I write &#8212; even if it doesn&#8217;t always seem that way &#8212; matters to people.<\/p>\n<p>And it matters to me; it&#8217;s a great feeling having people come out of nowhere and say, &#8220;Hey, that was cool!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s a reminder that the best gift we can give ourselves as writers is keeping at it.
