Now I went and got me a copy of Scars and Other Distinguishing Marks. Couldn't resist that recommendation.

Fine, I'll go see it. ;)

I've been meaning to anyway -- like you, horror lately has kind of left me shrugging and saying "meh." But Joss Whedon can do no wrong (well, almost *coughalienressurectioncough*), so I'll pretty much check out whatever he does.

Just watched The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon. The bit at 2:30 in -- with the knife...kinda brilliant in its own stupid way. Just the look on the demon actor's face throughout. Again. And again...and again...and again...

They did a good job with the spoon damage hits makeup. I don't know how I missed this, but I'm glad I now know it exists.

Willard and Jeepers Creepers I've seen. I totally forgot to mention Jeepers Creepers. The first 30-40 minutes of the first one is just good, creepy fun. I've heard of Cabin Fever, but haven't seen it. Unrest is totally new to me, so thanks for a couple suggestions!

As for Duel, I've seen it. Richard Matheson stuff is always good by me. And he spawned a snazzy writer in Richard Christian Matheson, whose Scars and Other Distinguishing Marks hit me when I read it when I really started writing. Particularly a story called "Red," which to this day, just might be the most devastating thing I've ever read. A totally different kind of horror, that one...

I'm not much into modern horror movies, I've only seen a handful in the last couple decades. But I'll say "The Horribly Slow Murderer with the Extremely Inefficient Weapon" will pretty much fill in for most of the horror movies from the last 15 years or so: http://youtu.be/9VDvgL58h_Y

Aside from that, I recommend
"Willard" Can't go wrong with Crispin Glover!
"Cabin Fever" I think I mentioned this one before.
"Unrest" Just completely bizarre.
"Jeepers Creepers" Not by Stephen King, but has a Stephen King vibe.

I'll definitely be watching "The Cabin in the Woods," thanks for the recommendation. :)

And since this is the last post in this horror series, I have to recommend the movie "Duel," even though it's from 1971. It's just that awesome.
