Tammy,

While the oboe is such a cool instrument, I can only imagine that somebody still learning to play the oboe had to be a challenge in concentration.

I used to work in a group home with 6 mentally retarded adults. I worked very closely with them, helping them become more self sufficient. It reached a point where I supervised them more than did things for them. Things still got loud in the house at times; I learned to block out background noises at that job.

It reached a point where if things were quiet, I got up and made sure all was okay!

I still think you should win an award for dealing with the sounds akin to the death throes of a congestive wombat! :)

Cynthia: I think I still do better with background noises than interruptions, even to this day. I think it's why I'd rather have construction noise than the occasional yapping of a dog in the background. I can make the construction noise blend into my environment because it's constant. The yapping dog thing isn't regular, and it's harder for me to concentrate when the noises are sporadic.

When I was a nanny, I had to concentrate on various things while a 9-year old practiced her oboe. With sounds akin to the death throes of a congestive wombat, oboe tested my ability to tune out everything around me. It is an art, indeed.

But jackhammers! I'm rather impressed. :)

I'm so glad you're able to write with noises in the background. I remember a time where I hated even walking anywhere near where you were writing, or hearing loud noises outside knowing it would distract and frustrate you and make you stop writing. I still try to be respectful of your space and quiet, and not distract you... but it's nice to know I don't have to go nuts trying to keep things perfect. LOL!
